Khoni is a quiet small town of around 9,000 inhabitants in the Imereti region of western Georgia, some 35 kilometres west of Kutaisi on the Tskhenistskali River. Its position in the subtropical Colchian lowland has favoured grape, maize, tobacco, tea and fruit cultivation since the Middle Ages, with persimmons, pomegranates and figs particularly typical. In the 18th and 19th centuries Khoni was a centre of Mingrelian-influenced silk production, whose workshops and small manufactories shaped urban life. The streetscape is dominated by one- and two-storey wooden houses with wraparound verandas, carved balustrades and tidy inner courtyards, alongside Soviet culture houses and schools. Highlights include the medieval 7th-century Saviour Cathedral, one of the oldest surviving sacral buildings in the region, the local history museum and the central park. The wider area is especially famed for the spectacular Okatse Canyon, with its glass-floored skywalk above a 50-metre drop, the Kinchkha Waterfall and the entrance of the Kinkhia Cave.
