Vake Park (Georgia)

Weather…

Vake Park is the largest public park in Tbilisi, opened in 1946 within the Vake district. Spanning approximately 200 hectares, it was originally commissioned as Victory Park to commemorate the end of World War II. The park's architectural layout follows a monumental classical style, featuring a wide grand staircase that leads to the Memorial of the Unknown Soldier and a towering statue symbolizing victory. Situated on a slope, the park contains over a thousand species of trees and shrubs, creating extensive shaded alleys. In recent years, the park has undergone significant restoration to upgrade its infrastructure, including modern playgrounds and sports facilities, while preserving its historical aesthetic. It is connected via an aerial tramway to Turtle Lake (Kus Tba), integrating it into a wider recreational network. Vake Park serves as the city's green lung and remains a primary destination for outdoor exercise, family gatherings, and national commemorative events.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
Prominently located along Chavchavadze Avenue in an upscale district, the park is very easily reached by multiple city bus lines stopping at the main entrance. Taxis are abundant, though heavy avenue traffic can sometimes slow down the journey.
📅
Best season
The park provides a wonderfully cool, shaded retreat beneath huge mature trees during the scorching mid-summer months. Autumn transforms the vast avenues into an incredibly photogenic corridor of falling golden leaves and crisp, refreshing air.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The formal lower section consists entirely of wide, perfectly flat paved avenues and monumental staircases centering around large fountains. As you move deeper, the landscape rapidly transitions into steep, rugged wooded hills ascending to Turtle Lake.
🎒
What to bring
Casual, stylish urban footwear is entirely appropriate for strolling the main paved recreational zones. However, if you plan to tackle the increasingly steep dirt trails leading up the back ridge to the lake, proper hiking shoes are recommended.
🅿️
Parking
Finding available street parking along the busy, commercial main avenue is notoriously difficult and rarely worth the immense frustration. Arriving effortlessly by city bus or a local taxi application is overwhelmingly the more sensible choice.
⚠️
Safety
This is an extremely popular, family-friendly destination where general safety is consistently high throughout the day. Pedestrians should simply remain alert for fast-moving rented scooters and energetic cyclists sharing the expansive main paths.
⏱️
Time needed
A leisurely, peaceful walk through the grand central alleys typically occupies visitors for about an hour. Those choosing to hike vigorously up through the back woods to reach the lake infrastructure will easily turn this into a rewarding half-day trip.
