Ozurgeti, with about 14,000 inhabitants, is the capital of the Guria region in western Georgia, lying at around 130 metres elevation among the gentle foothills of the Lesser Caucasus, some 35 kilometres from the Black Sea coast. The town grew from the Middle Ages around the seat of the Gurieli princely family and was raised to administrative status by the Russian Empire in 1840. In the late 19th century Guria became one of Georgia's main areas for tea and hazelnut cultivation, thanks largely to the Chinese botanist Lao Jin Jao, who established the first plantations here in 1893. Today the city's economy is based on tea, hazelnut, citrus and timber processing. Highlights include the neoclassical drama theatre in the centre, the Guria Ethnographic Museum with its tapestries, folk costumes and drinking horns, and the nearby medieval fortresses of Bakhvi and Aksketi. A few kilometres away a narrow-gauge mountain railway climbs to Bakhmaro, a climatic resort at 2,000 metres famed across the Caucasus for the meeting of sea and mountain air.
