Kobuleti is a long, narrow seaside spa town of around 18,000 inhabitants on the Black Sea coast of the Autonomous Republic of Adjara, some 25 kilometres north of Batumi. It stretches for nearly twelve kilometres along a fine pebble beach that in the summer months becomes a magnet for Georgian and foreign holidaymakers. The local subtropical-humid climate with mild winters makes the area one of the country's main centres for tea and citrus cultivation. In Soviet times Kobuleti was a much-loved Young Pioneer camp, sanatorium and health resort; today, with its modernised hotels and seaside promenades, it caters above all to family tourism. Outside the high season the town serves as a gateway to the Kintrishi Nature Reserve, with mountain rivers and waterfalls, and to the Ramsar-listed Ispani peat bogs, an unusual subtropical wetland. Other attractions include the Orthodox Church of Saint Andrew, the local history museum, the lively beach bazaar and the old Ottoman Petra fortress right on the coastal road.
