Crystal Mountains

The Crystal Mountains (Monts de Cristal) form a panoramic, mist-shrouded mountain range in northwestern Gabon. This region is primarily known for its exceptionally high botanical diversity, attracting botanists and enthusiastic hikers from all over the world. The mountains are often enveloped in low clouds, creating the humid microclimate necessary for an incredible abundance of endemic plants, particularly hundreds of unique orchid and begonia species. The rugged terrain is carved by wild rivers and easy on the eye waterfalls, including the impressive Kinguélé and Tchimbélé Falls. These flowing rivers also power hydroelectric dams that supply electricity to Libreville. Beyond the flora, the dense rainforest harbors an astonishing variety of butterflies, alongside forest elephants and several monkey species. Hiking trails lead adventurous visitors deep into this mystical, emerald-green world. The region is easy to reach from Libreville via roads heading towards Tchimbélé. The best time to visit is at the end of the rainy season or the early dry season when waterfalls are at their most spectacular and orchids bloom. A 4x4 vehicle is recommended.
