Kinguélé Hydroelectric Power Station (Gabon)

Weather…

The Kinguélé Hydroelectric Power Station is Gabon's oldest major hydroelectric facility and a central component of power generation in the country's northwest. It is situated on the upper reaches of the Mbei River in Estuaire Province, tucked away within the lush vegetation of the Crystal Mountains. Inaugurated in 1973, the facility operates in tandem with the downstream Tchimbelé station to form an integrated energy complex. By damming the river, a constant head of water is maintained to drive the turbines. A current modernization and expansion project, known as 'Kinguélé Aval', aims to significantly increase capacity by constructing a new plant below the existing installations. This project marks Gabon's first independent power producer (IPP) initiative with international backing. Kinguélé provides essential power to the residents and businesses of Libreville, supporting national efforts to transition toward a more sustainable and renewable energy mix.
