Akanda Bird Sanctuary is best visited during migration season from September to November and March to May. Tens of thousands of waders, terns, and herons stop over in the mangroves northwest of Libreville.
Best time of day
Birdwatching is most rewarding in the early morning hours after sunrise (6-9 a.m.) when birds are most active. Late afternoon from 4 p.m. also features good opportunities as birds return to their roosting sites.
Etiquette
Stay on designated paths and observation platforms to avoid disturbing the fragile mangrove vegetation. Avoid noise and sudden movements - the birds are shy and may take flight.
What to bring
A good spotting scope or high-magnification binoculars (e.g., 20-60×) are essential for identifying birds in the mangroves and mudflats. Waterproof clothing and rubber boots are recommended as the paths can be wet and muddy.
Getting there
Akanda Bird Sanctuary is located about 20 kilometers north of Libreville and is accessible via the N1 road. Registration at the visitor center is required; guided tours by park rangers are offered and highly recommended.
