Sommet Maman is a prominent elevation in the south-central highlands of French Guiana, forming part of the rugged relief of the Guiana Shield. Its geological composition consists mainly of resistant granites and gneisses that have defied the tropical elements for millions of years. Due to its extreme isolation, there is no human infrastructure nearby, making Sommet Maman an untouched sanctuary for Amazonian biodiversity. Scientists are interested in this mountain as a potential site for studying endemism in insects and highland plants. The steep slopes lead to numerous watercourses that feed the major river systems in the south.
