Sorgues is a spirited town in the Vaucluse department, strategically positioned in the lower Rhône valley. Its historical prominence began in the 14th century when Pope John XXII commissioned the construction of a summer palace here, the first of its kind for the Avignon papacy. The town's nickname, 'The Town of Many Waters,' stems from the confluence of the Ouvèze and Rhône and a dense network of canals that powered mills for centuries. In the 19th century, this hydraulic power transformed Sorgues into an industrial powerhouse for Vaucluse, specializing in explosives, paper, and textiles. Artistically, the town holds a special place as a cradle of Cubism; it was here in 1912 that Picasso and Braque developed their revolutionary collage techniques. Modern-day Sorgues is a bustling community known for its sports facilities, its proximity to the prestigious Châteauneuf-du-Pape vineyards, and its role as a key logistics hub in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region.
