Step back in time and explore the ancient environment of Juliobona on this expert-led tour.
Lillebonne is a historic town in the Seine-Maritime department of Normandy, situated near the mouth of the Seine River. Its origins date back to Roman times when it was known as Juliobona, a prosperous regional capital. The most iconic landmark is the Roman theater, one of the largest and best-preserved ancient sites in Northern France, capable of seating up to 5,000 people. In the medieval period, Lillebonne regained political importance as a residence of William the Conqueror; it was here in 1066 that he met with his barons to plan the invasion of England. The ruins of the medieval castle still stand today as a reminder of its ducal past. During the industrial revolution, the town became a center for textile and later chemical industries due to its proximity to the Seine. Modern Lillebonne is a bustling hub that balances its industrial role with a deep commitment to preserving and showcasing its unique archaeological heritage. It also serves as a gateway to the scenic Boucles de la Seine Normande Regional Natural Park.
