Rouen, the historic capital of Normandy, is beautifully situated on the Seine River and is famously known as the "City of a Hundred Spires." The centerpiece of the city is the Notre-Dame Cathedral, a Gothic masterpiece whose facade was famously depicted by Claude Monet in a renowned series of paintings. Rouen's history is inextricably linked to Joan of Arc, who was tragically executed here in 1431. A modern church and a dedicated museum at the Old Market Square (Vieux Marché) now commemorate her life and legacy. The old town is noted for its narrow lanes and over 2,000 remarkably well-preserved half-timbered houses, creating a distinct medieval ambiance.
