Caen, the capital of the Normandy region, is a city deeply defined by its historical ties to William the Conqueror. The city reached its zenith in the 11th century when William established the Caen Castle, one of Europe's largest medieval fortifications, alongside the twin abbeys: Abbaye aux Hommes and Abbaye aux Dames. Despite suffering catastrophic damage during the Battle of Normandy in 1944, Caen has meticulously preserved significant portions of its medieval heritage, constructed from the distinctive pale Caen stone. The Mémorial de Caen, a premier museum of peace, provides an exhaustive documentation of World War II history and the D-Day landings. Situated on the Orne River, the city is connected to the English Channel by a navigation canal, maintaining its economic relevance as a strategic port. Today, Caen is a dynamic university hub and serves as a primary gateway for visitors exploring the Allied landing beaches. The city's identity is shaped by a unique blend of Romanesque architecture, high-tech research facilities, and a thriving contemporary cultural scene.

Start your day in the picturesque Le Vaugueux district before exploring William the Conqueror's massive castle. After a cultural dive at the Normandy Museum, walk to the ornate Saint-Pierre Church. Spend the afternoon in the botanical garden's serenity, concluding with the grand Men's Abbey, which now serves as the City Hall.
This cycling tour connects the city's two great abbeys with the historic center and the modern peace museum. From the Ladies' Abbey, cycle to the castle, cross the botanical garden, and reach the Men's Abbey. A longer stretch takes you to the Memorial before ending the day in the charming Vaugueux district.
By car, you can easily reach the slightly outlying Caen Memorial as your first stop. Then, the tour takes you to the city's green heart, the Botanical Garden. A central parking stop at the castle allows for on-foot exploration of the fortress and the Vaugueux district. To finish, visit the two architectural gems: the Ladies' and Men's Abbeys.
