Sotteville-lès-Rouen is an industrial city situated on the left bank of the Seine, immediately south of Rouen in the Seine-Maritime department. Its history is deeply intertwined with the arrival of the railway in 1843, which rapidly transformed the rural settlement into a hub for heavy industry and transport. The town's massive railway workshops and marshalling yard became its defining features, which also made it a key strategic target during World War II. Allied bombings in 1944 destroyed nearly 70% of the city. The post-war reconstruction, led by architect Marcel Lods, gave Sotteville a modern urban layout with wide avenues and functional residential districts. Today, the city is a significant cultural player in Normandy, most notably as the host of 'Vivacité', one of Europe's largest street arts festivals held every June. Sotteville features excellent sporting facilities, including the Jean-Adret stadium, and is seamlessly connected to Rouen's city center by the tram-bus system. While the railway sector (SNCF) remains a major employer, the local economy is increasingly diversifying into services and light industry.
