Harfleur, located in the Seine-Maritime department of Normandy, is a town defined by its illustrious and turbulent maritime history. During the Middle Ages, it was the principal port of the Kingdom of France, often referred to as 'the key to the sea'. Its massive fortifications and strategic position at the mouth of the Seine made it a primary target during the Hundred Years' War. The town is famously associated with the 1415 siege by King Henry V of England, an event immortalized by William Shakespeare. However, the gradual silting of its harbor and the rise of Le Havre in the 16th century led to its decline as a major naval power. Today, Harfleur features a captivating glimpse into its medieval past through its well-preserved timber-framed houses and the ruins of its ancient walls. The 15th-century Saint-Martin Church, with its soaring 83-meter spire, remains the town's architectural masterpiece and a prominent landmark of the Estuary. Now part of the Greater Le Havre area, Harfleur maintains a distinct character, blending its industrial surroundings with a rich cultural life and beautiful riverside parks.
