Le Havre is a major port city in the Normandy region of France, situated on the right bank of the Seine estuary where it meets the English Channel. Founded by King Francis I in 1517, the city underwent a dramatic transformation after its center was almost completely destroyed during World War II. Between 1945 and 1964, the architect Auguste Perret led a pioneering reconstruction project using reinforced concrete, which created a unique modernist urban landscape. This achievement earned Le Havre a place on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2005 as an outstanding example of post-war architecture. The city's port is the second largest in France after Marseille and serves as a vital gateway for international maritime trade. Le Havre also holds great cultural significance as the birthplace of Impressionism, inspired by Claude Monet's painting of its harbor. The Saint Joseph Church, with its 107-meter-high octagonal tower, stands as a lighthouse-like monument in the heart of the city. Le Havre hosted Olympic football matches in 2024 at the Stade Océane. The port continued its logistics modernisation in 2025.
