Cherbourg-en-Cotentin, located at the northern tip of the Cotentin Peninsula in Normandy, is a city defined by its relationship with the sea. It has the world's largest artificial roadstead, a massive naval infrastructure project initiated under Louis XVI and completed under Napoleon III. This harbor has served as a strategic naval base for centuries, protecting the French fleet and providing a gateway to the English Channel. Cherbourg gained international fame in 1912 as the first continental port of call for the RMS Titanic. During World War II, the 'Battle of Cherbourg' in June 1944 was a critical moment, as the Allies desperately needed its deep-water port to funnel supplies into Europe. Today, the city is a vital hub for French nuclear submarine construction and a major terminal for ferries crossing to Ireland and England. Its cultural identity is highlighted by the Cité de la Mer museum and its cinematic legacy, most notably the 1964 film 'The Umbrellas of Cherbourg.' The city's geography features dramatic coastal cliffs and a mild oceanic climate that sustains lush public parks.
