Le Trait is a historic industrial town in the Seine-Maritime department of Normandy, strategically located on a sweeping bend of the River Seine. The town's modern history was defined by the establishment of the 'Ateliers et Chantiers de la Seine-Maritime' in 1917, which transformed it into a global hub for shipbuilding, producing everything from submarines to luxury liners. This industrial boom led to the creation of a distinctive 'Garden City' urban layout, designed to house thousands of workers in green, structured neighborhoods that are still admired today for their visionary social planning. Geographically, Le Trait is uniquely positioned between the tidal river and the lush hills of the Trait-Mauny forest, forming part of the Boucles de la Seine Normande Regional Natural Park. While the shipyards closed in the 1970s, the town has successfully reinvented itself as a center for advanced engineering and logistics. Visitors are drawn to its maritime heritage monuments, its scenic riverside cycling paths along the 'Seine à Vélo' route, and its proximity to the historic Norman Abbeys trail. It remains a spirited community that honors its tough industrial past while embracing a green, sustainable future.
