Cherbourg-en-Cotentin is located at the tip of the Cotentin Peninsula in Normandy and features one of the world's largest man-made harbors. The monumental fortifications built in the 18th and 19th centuries protect the port, which has long served as a strategic base for the French Navy. The city gained international notoriety in 1912 as the only continental stop for the RMS Titanic before its ill-fated voyage across the Atlantic. The former transatlantic maritime terminal now houses Cité de la Mer, a maritime museum featuring 'Le Redoutable,' the largest nuclear submarine in the world open to the public. Cherbourg is also famous for its umbrella manufacture, 'Les Parapluies de Cherbourg,' which achieved global fame through Jacques Demy's classic musical film. Today, the city is a vital maritime hub, combining port trade, fishing, and advanced naval shipbuilding.
