Wissembourg is a historic and pretty town located in the Bas-Rhin department at the northern tip of Alsace in the Grand Est region. Situated directly on the border with Germany, it lies on the Lauter river where the Palatinate Forest meets the Rhine Plain. The town's origins date back to the 7th century with the establishment of a Benedictine abbey, which grew to be one of the wealthiest and most influential in the Holy Roman Empire. The architectural highlight is the Abbey Church of Saints Peter and Paul, the largest Gothic building in Alsace after Strasbourg Cathedral, housing a famous 11th-century stained glass window. Wissembourg was a prominent member of the Décapole, a league of ten Alsatian free cities, and witnessed key historical events, including the first major battle of the Franco-Prussian War in 1870. The town center is a maze of pleasant streets lined with half-timbered houses, such as the iconic 'Maison du Sel' with its multi-layered roof. Today, Wissembourg is a lively cultural crossroads, known for its traditional Alsatian festivals, its vineyard-covered hillsides, and its role as the northern gateway to the Alsace Wine Route, attracting tourists from across Europe.
