Annweiler am Trifels is a historic gem tucked away in the Queich valley within the Palatinate Forest. The city gained prominence during the Staufer dynasty, largely due to Trifels Castle, which housed the Imperial Regalia of the Holy Roman Empire for over a century. A legendary historical footnote occurred in 1193 when King Richard the Lionheart of England was held captive here. Annweiler was granted the status of a Free Imperial City in 1219 by Emperor Frederick II, a rare privilege for its size. The town's medieval center features photogenic half-timbered houses and historic tanneries lining the riverbanks. As a state-recognized climatic health resort, Annweiler attracts visitors with its mild climate and dramatic sandstone rock formations, which are world-class destinations for free climbers. The town remains a focal point for Palatine history and outdoor recreation in Southwest Germany.
