Pastoralists follow seasonal grazing patterns, moving herds to the Nugal Valley during dry spells. The region has a low population density of about 5 people per km², with most inhabitants living in temporary settlements. Traditional water management includes shallow wells and berkads (cement-lined reservoirs). In recent years, the Puntland government has partnered with FAO to improve rangeland management and drought resilience through early warning systems and veterinary services.
