Thann is a welcoming town located in the Haut-Rhin department of the Grand Est region, at the entrance to the Thur Valley. It is best known for the Collegiate Church of Saint-Thiébaut, a masterpiece of Rhenish Gothic architecture built between 1324 and 1516, featuring an exquisitely carved portal and a 78-meter openwork spire. The town's historical significance is underscored by its location on the border between the Alsatian plain and the Vosges Mountains. Thann's prosperity was historically driven by the textile industry and the cultivation of the Rangen vineyard, which is the southernmost Grand Cru in Alsace. The vineyard's volcanic soil is unique in the region, producing highly prized Riesling and Pinot Gris wines. Overlooking the town are the ruins of Engelbourg Castle; during its demolition by Louis XIV's orders, a circular section of the tower fell on its side, creating the famous 'Witch's Eye' landmark.
