Gambsheim is a significant commune in the Bas-Rhin department of the Grand Est region, situated on the left bank of the Rhine. Its location makes it a vital hub for Franco-German relations, connected to the town of Rheinau in Germany via a road crossing the Rhine dam. The town is geographically dominated by the Rhine plain and the massive hydroelectric complex. This facility includes a double lock system, which ranks among the largest and most used in Europe for river navigation. A key environmental feature is the fish ladder, inaugurated in 2006, which provides a passage for migratory fish such as salmon to bypass the dam's obstacles. Despite its industrial infrastructure, Gambsheim maintains an authentic Alsatian atmosphere, characterized by traditional timber-framed houses and a strong sense of community. The surrounding Rhine forests and riverbanks are protected areas offering diverse leisure activities, including hiking and bird watching. As part of the Strasbourg metropolitan influence, the town enjoys modern amenities while preserving its rural and historical roots.
