Situated in the Rhine plain of the Bas-Rhin department near Haguenau, Bischwiller is home to a rich history as a former powerhouse of the Alsatian textile industry. During the 16th and 17th centuries, the town became a prominent refuge for Huguenots who brought with them advanced cloth-weaving skills, laying the foundation for an eventual industrial boom. By the 19th century, the processing of jute had earned the town recognition and the nickname City of Weavers. This profound industrial heritage is meticulously preserved and displayed today at the Maison des Arts and the Musée de la Laub, the latter appropriately housed in a historic 17th-century market hall featuring antique looms and artifacts of working-class life. Another cultural jewel is the Protestant church, which houses a magnificently preserved Silbermann organ dating back to 1729, making it a revered venue for classical music concerts. The town center itself is a pleasure to explore, featuring traditional half-timbered Alsatian houses and beautifully landscaped green spaces like the Parc du Château. The peaceful banks of the Moder River, which flows gently through the town, provide shaded walking paths for relaxed afternoons, balancing regional charm with an industrial legacy.
