Verdun, set along the banks of the Meuse river, is globally recognized as a powerful symbol of remembrance and peace. The town's identity is indelibly linked to the harrowing Battle of Verdun in 1916. The surrounding hills and forests are home to the vast former battlefields, where the imposing Douaumont Ossuary and the scarred remains of Fort Vaux serve as somber historical monuments. The Mémorial de Verdun, a comprehensively updated museum situated right on the battlefield, gives deep historical context and moving exhibits regarding the First World War. Beneath the town itself lies the Underground Citadel, a massive network of logistical tunnels that visitors can explore via small automated rail cars. Despite its heavy history, modern Verdun is a surprisingly peaceful and easy on the eye town. The riverfront promenade is lined with appealing cafes, and the high ground is crowned by the impressive Notre-Dame Cathedral, one of the oldest religious structures in the region. Visitors must also try the local culinary specialty, "dragées", sugar-coated almonds that have been crafted here since the 13th century and remain a staple at French celebrations.
