Tucked away in the Argonne forest, Sainte-Menehould is a town characterized by its elegant 18th-century brick and stone architecture. This distinct style emerged after a devastating fire in 1719 destroyed most of the medieval center, resulting in the harmonious, symmetrical layout visible today around the Place du Général Leclerc. History enthusiasts recognize the town as a critical point during the French Revolution; it was here in 1791 that the fleeing King Louis XVI was recognized, leading to his arrest in nearby Varennes. Gastronomically, Sainte-Menehould is famous across France for its unique culinary specialty, Pieds de cochon à la Sainte-Menehould (pig's trotters boiled for hours until the bones are entirely soft), a dish famously enjoyed by writer Victor Hugo. Furthermore, it is the birthplace of Dom Pérignon, the legendary Benedictine monk who made significant contributions to the creation of Champagne. The surrounding Argonne forest provides a sprawling natural playground with extensive hiking trails, serene lakes, and dense oak woodlands.
