Charleville-Mézières is the capital of the Ardennes department, formed in 1966 by merging the twin towns of Charleville and Mézières. The centerpiece of Charleville is the memorable Place Ducale, a 17th-century Baroque masterpiece nearly identical in design to Paris's Place des Vosges. In contrast, Mézières retains its medieval character with remaining fortifications and the Basilica of Notre-Dame-d'Espérance, famous for its modern stained-glass windows by René Dürrbach. The city is internationally celebrated as the world capital of puppetry, hosting the prestigious World Puppet Theatre Festival every two years. It is also the birthplace of the legendary poet Arthur Rimbaud, whose legacy is honored in a dedicated museum. Situated on a bend of the Meuse River, the city gives a unique blend of architectural grandeur and the rugged natural beauty of the Ardennes region.
