Saint-Mihiel is located in the Meuse department in the Grand Est region and is a significant cultural center of Lorraine. The town owes its existence to the Benedictine Abbey of Saint-Michel, founded in the 8th century, which served as a spiritual center of Europe for centuries. The still-existing abbey library houses precious manuscripts and incunabula. Saint-Mihiel is particularly famous as the workplace of the Renaissance sculptor Ligier Richier; his masterpiece, the 'Entombment of Christ' (Sépulcre) in the Church of Saint-Étienne, is considered one of France's most important sacred artworks. The town's geography is characterized by the loops of the Meuse river and the surrounding limestone cliffs, known as the 'Dames de Meuse.' In the 20th century, the town gained notoriety for the 'Saint-Mihiel Salient' during the First World War, a strategically important bulge in the front line that was liberated in 1918 by American troops. The local architecture combines Baroque abbey buildings with stately Renaissance houses and memorials of the World Wars.
