Värtsintunturi is a prominent fell in northeastern Lapland, situated in the remote Savukoski municipality. It is part of the Värriötunturit range, known for its extreme arctic conditions and scientific importance. The fell is located in close proximity to the Värriö Strict Nature Reserve, where researchers have studied the impacts of climate change on arctic ecosystems for decades. The summit region of Värtsintunturi is nearly barren, dominated by blockfields created by frost action, while the lower slopes merge into the vast coniferous forests of the taiga. Geologically, the mountain is composed of very old crystalline rock, part of the Fennoscandian Shield. The area surrounding Värtsintunturi is one of the most sparsely populated regions in Finland, providing a vital habitat for large predators such as brown bears and wolverines. Access is partially restricted due to the extreme remoteness and its proximity to protected research zones.

The remote mountain is usually reached via long, rough dirt roads in eastern Lapland, followed immediately by arduous off-trail hiking. Because of its extreme isolation, the area sees very few casual visitors throughout the year.

August and early September are generally the best months for hiking to avoid the worst of the aggressive summer mosquitoes. Late winter has challenging but rewarding conditions suited for experienced backcountry skiing enthusiasts.

The terrain is defined by pristine, untamed wilderness with steep fell slopes, dense ancient forests, and no maintained trails. The ground is frequently rocky, extremely uneven, or covered in thick, tricky vegetation.

Vehicles are typically just parked at the quiet ends of remote logging roads wherever space naturally allows. There are absolutely no official facilities, and leaving a car in these isolated spots is done entirely at the owner's risk.
