Shah Jahan's Mosque (Pakistan)

Weather…

The Shah Jahan Mosque in Thatta, Sindh, is a remarkable masterpiece of Mughal architecture, built between 1644 and 1647. It was commissioned by Emperor Shah Jahan as a token of gratitude to the people of Thatta for providing him refuge during his period of exile. Unlike the sandstone mosques of Lahore, this structure is distinguished by its extensive use of red brick and spirited blue tilework, showcasing a strong Timurid influence from Central Asia. The mosque is famous for its unique acoustic design, featuring 93 domes that allow sound to carry clearly across the entire complex without modern amplification. Interestingly, the mosque was constructed without any minarets, a rare feature for a structure of its scale. The intricate geometric brickwork and floral tile patterns are considered some of the finest examples of Sindhi craftsmanship. As part of the historical monuments of Thatta, it is on the UNESCO World Heritage tentative list and continues to serve as an active place of worship and a symbol of regional history.
