Mohenjo-Daro, which means 'Mound of the Dead' in Sindhi, is one of the most significant archaeological sites in the world, serving as a major hub of the Indus Valley Civilization. Built around 2500 BCE in present-day Sindh, Pakistan, it was one of the earliest and most advanced urban settlements in human history. The city is renowned for its sophisticated civil engineering and urban planning, featuring a grid-like street layout, standardized fired bricks, and an elaborate drainage system. Notable structures include the 'Great Bath,' a large public water tank likely used for ritual purification, and a high citadel that housed monumental public buildings. Its inhabitants practiced long-distance trade, reaching as far as Mesopotamia, and utilized a script that remains undeciphered to this day. The city was mysteriously abandoned around 1900 BCE, potentially due to climate shifts or changes in the course of the Indus River. Inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1980, Mohenjo-Daro remains a testament to the dawn of civilization.
