Utsjoki
Utsjoki is the northernmost municipality in Finland and the only one where the Sami people are the majority. It is situated along the Teno River, which forms the border with Norway and is world-renowned for its Atlantic salmon fishing. The most significant historical site is the Utsjoki Church Huts (Kirkkotuvat), a collection of 18th and 19th-century wooden buildings located by Lake Mantojärvi. These huts served as temporary accommodation for Sami families during major church festivals and markets in centuries past. The landscape is characterized by rolling fells and Arctic tundra, offering a stark and serene beauty. The Sami Bridge, spanning the Teno River, serves as a vital link to Norway and is a local landmark. Due to its extreme northern location, Utsjoki experiences the longest polar night and midnight sun periods in Finland. It is a premier location for viewing the Aurora Borealis in its most natural setting, far from any urban light pollution.
