Pallas is the heart of the Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park, Finland's most visited national park. The region is world-famous for its 'tunturi' (fell) landscape, a chain of gentle, treeless ridges that offer endless views over the Arctic wilderness. Scientific measurements at Pallastunturi have confirmed that the air here is among the cleanest in the world. The historic Hotel Pallas, a distinctive wooden building from 1938 (rebuilt after being destroyed in the war), is a hub for hikers and skiers. The 55-kilometer Hetta-Pallas trail is Finland's oldest and most popular long-distance hiking route, leading over the summits of the mountain chain. In winter, Pallas features a unique skiing experience focusing on natural snow and tranquility, without artificial snowmaking. There are no large holiday resorts; instead, silence and vast open spaces dominate. The area belongs to the Muonio municipality and is known for reindeer herding and polar night experiences.
