Great Temple of Yeha (Ethiopia)

Weather…

The Great Temple of Yeha is the oldest standing structure in Ethiopia, dating back to the 7th century BC. It was constructed by the Kingdom of D'mt and is believed to have been a temple dedicated to the Sabaean god Almaqah. The building is renowned for its remarkable dry-masonry technique, where massive limestone blocks were fitted together with such precision that no mortar was required, allowing it to endure for millennia. The temple measures approximately 18 meters in length and 15 meters in width, with walls that still stand to a significant height. Inscriptions in Sabaean script and artifacts found nearby provide evidence of strong cultural and religious ties to ancient South Arabia (modern-day Yemen). Yeha served as a major political and religious center long before the rise of the Aksumite Empire. Later, a Christian monastery was established adjacent to the temple, highlighting the continuous sacred significance of the site. Today, it remains the most vital witness to Ethiopia's pre-Aksumite civilization.
