Dungur Palace (Ethiopia)

Weather…

Dungur Palace, popularly known as the Palace of the Queen of Sheba, is a significant ruin site on the western edge of Aksum. However, archaeological investigations date the structure to the 4th to 6th centuries AD, long after the legendary reign of Sheba. The facility was originally a luxurious villa with over 50 rooms arranged around several inner courtyards. The building featured massive stone walls, staircases, and drainage systems, indicating the high standard of living of the Axumite elite. Notable is the symmetry of the floor plan and the use of podiums, which are typical of Axumite monumental architecture. The ruins were excavated in the 1960s and provide deep insights into the domestic life of the upper class during Aksum's heyday. Legend continues to link the site firmly with Ethiopian identity and biblical history.
