Al Nejashi Mosque (Ethiopia)

Weather…

The Al-Nejashi Mosque, located in the village of Negash in the Tigray region, is recognized as one of the oldest and most significant Islamic sites in Africa. It marks the location where the first followers of the Prophet Muhammad sought refuge in 615 AD after fleeing persecution in Mecca, an event known as the First Hijra. The Christian King of Aksum at the time, Ashama ibn Abjar (Al-Nejashi), granted them protection, establishing a historical precedent for peaceful coexistence between Islam and Christianity in Ethiopia. The current complex includes a modernized mosque and the burial sites of 15 companions of the Prophet who were interred here. The site has recently undergone extensive restoration with international support to preserve its historical and architectural integrity. For Muslims globally, Negash stands as a symbol of tolerance and justice, often referred to as the cradle of Islam on the African continent.
