Debre Damo Monastery (Ethiopia)

Weather…

Debre Damo is one of Ethiopia's oldest and most significant monasteries, perched atop a steep flat-topped mountain (amba) in the Tigray region. It was founded in the 6th century by Saint Abba Aregawi, one of the 'Nine Saints' who played a crucial role in spreading Christianity throughout Ethiopia. Access to the monastery is notoriously difficult, requiring a climb up a 15-meter vertical cliff face using a thick leather rope. The main church is recognized as the oldest existing example of Aksumite-style architecture, featuring intricate wood carvings and stone reliefs. A strict religious rule prohibits women and female animals from entering the monastery grounds. During the 16th-century Muslim invasions, Debre Damo served as an impregnable fortress, safeguarding precious religious manuscripts and royal treasures. The monks continue to live in absolute seclusion, following centuries-old traditions and dedicating their lives to prayer and the preservation of Ethiopia's Christian heritage.
