Church of Our Lady Mary of Zion (Ethiopia)

Weather…

The Church of Our Lady Mary of Zion in Axum is the holiest site of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church, boasting a history of nearly 1,700 years. Originally built in the 4th century under King Ezana, the church was destroyed and rebuilt several times, most recently in the 17th century by Emperor Fasilides. The complex consists of the old church, which women are forbidden to enter, and the modern cathedral commissioned by Emperor Haile Selassie in the 1960s. The most significant religious element is the Chapel of the Tablet, where according to Ethiopian tradition, the original Ark of the Covenant containing the Ten Commandments is kept. Only a single consecrated guardian has lifelong access to this relic and is never permitted to leave the chapel grounds. For centuries, Mary of Zion was the coronation site for Ethiopian emperors and remains a central destination for pilgrims, especially during the annual Zion Mariam festival in November. The church represents Ethiopia's unbroken link to biblical heritage and Africa's early Christian tradition.
