Debre Damo (Ethiopia)

Weather…

Visitors flock to Debre Damo not only for its profound religious significance but also for the thrilling adventure of reaching it. Founded in the 6th century by Abuna Aregawi, one of the Nine Saints, this ancient monastery sits atop a dramatic, sheer-sided amba (flat-topped mountain). The only way up is scaling a 15-meter cliff face using a plaited leather rope, making it a truly unique pilgrimage site. Note that according to tradition, only men are permitted to ascend to the monastery. Once at the top, you are rewarded with wide-open panoramic views of the rugged Tigray landscape. The complex includes the oldest existing, intact church in Ethiopia, built with alternating layers of wood and stone in the Axumite style. The natural surroundings are stark yet beautiful, characterized by the dramatic cliffs and deep valleys typical of the northern Ethiopian highlands. Traditional local gastronomy revolves around injera and various wats (stews), often featuring spicy berbere. The site is located off the main road between Axum and Adigrat, requiring a 4WD vehicle for the final stretch. The best time to visit is during the dry season from October to March, when the skies are clear and the rope climb is much safer and less slippery.
