Obelisk of Axum (Ethiopia)

Weather…

The Obelisk of Axum is a 24-meter-high solid granite stele erected in the 4th century AD during the height of the Aksumite Empire. Weighing approximately 160 tons, it is decorated with intricate reliefs depicting false doors and windows of a multi-story building. During the Italian occupation of Ethiopia in 1937, the obelisk was looted by Mussolini's troops and transported to Rome, where it stood for nearly seven decades. Following lengthy diplomatic negotiations, it was finally returned to Ethiopia in three parts in 2005 and re-erected at its original site in Axum in 2008. This obelisk is a powerful symbol of the technical sophistication and historical grandeur of ancient Ethiopian civilization. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site and part of an ensemble of stelae that once served as monumental grave markers for the kings of Aksum. The return of the monument is considered one of the most significant moments of cultural repatriation in African history.
