Tuhu Bog in western Estonia, located in Lääne County, is a fascinating wetland covering an area of over 2,000 hectares. It is a unique example of a developing mire that displays characteristics of both fens and bogs. Historically, this area remained largely untouched due to its inaccessibility, providing insight today into the post-glacial landscape development of Northern Europe. Geographically, the bog is characterized by vast peat expanses, small bog pools, and specialized flora such as sundew and rare orchid species. A boardwalk approximately 500 meters long allows visitors to access the heart of the mire without damaging the sensitive ecosystem. Tuhu Bog is a significant habitat for cranes and other migratory birds that use the area as a resting stop during their seasonal travels.

This expansive wetland area in western Estonia is best accessed from the nature reserve's official entry points, which directly guide visitors to the start of the well-maintained wooden boardwalk networks.

The period from late spring to autumn is absolutely good; early morning visits often reward with misty, mystical landscapes, while autumn transforms the bog's diverse flora into brilliant, lively colors.

The walk follows almost exclusively along narrow wooden boardwalks built directly over the soft, wet bog surface, consistently ensuring that visitors' feet remain comfortably dry throughout the entire hike.

What to bring

Waterproof footwear is highly advisable in case the wooden boardwalks become wet and slippery. Additionally, bringing windproof clothing is smart since the expansive bog landscape has very little shelter.

Parking

The Tuhu-Kalli nature reserve typically provides visitors with a designated, unpaved parking area that is very conveniently located right at the starting point of the main hiking trail through the bogland.
