Tolkuse Bog is a key component of the Luitemaa Nature Reserve in southwestern Estonia, representing a classic example of a Baltic raised bog. Formed over approximately 8,000 years through the accumulation of peat, the bog features a complex mosaic of peat pools and hummocks. Adjacent to the wetland are some of Estonia's highest coastal dunes, including Tornimägi, which rises 34 meters above sea level and marks the ancient shoreline of the Baltic Ice Lake. The area is biologically diverse, hosting specialized plants like the carnivorous sundew and various Sphagnum mosses. It also serves as a vital stopover and nesting site for numerous migratory bird species. A well-maintained nature trail with boardwalks allows visitors to explore the sensitive ecosystem while learning about the bog's role in carbon sequestration and water regulation.

The best time to visit is from May to September, when the bog landscape is at its peak and numerous insects and birds are active. Early autumn also has spectacular colors of the bog vegetation and quieter conditions.

Early morning and late afternoon offer the most intense bird song and convenient light conditions for photography. Midday can be bright, but the quiet atmosphere of the bog remains impressive.
Etiquette
Stay strictly on the boardwalk to avoid damaging the fragile bog surface. Stepping off the boardwalk, picking plants, and feeding animals are prohibited.
What to bring
Binoculars are useful for observing birds and insects from a distance. Sturdy, waterproof footwear is recommended as the path to the boardwalk can be slippery when wet.
Getting there
Tolkuse Bog is part of Luitemaa Nature Park and is accessible by car via the road to Rannametsa. A parking area is located near the boardwalk, which is wheelchair accessible.
