Kadaka-Mägi
Kadaka-Magi is a distinctive elevation named after the Estonian juniper (kadakas), which thrives here in abundance. Geologically, the hill is often situated on calcareous bedrock, typical of northern and western Estonia and the Baltic islands. While formed by glacial deposits, the presence of limestone contributes to a specific soil flora that includes rare orchid species and drought-resistant grasses. Kadaka-Magi frequently features a wide view from its summit extending toward the Baltic coast, and historically served as a prime location for shepherds grazing their flocks on the lean but herb-rich pastures. In local folklore, the juniper is revered as a sacred tree, and the hill was often regarded as a place of power and tranquility. Today, Kadaka-Magi is a protected biotope that highlights the importance of semi-arid grasslands for Estonian biodiversity. It stands as an excellent example of how geomorphology and unique plant communities intersect in the Baltic region.
