Bellavista Cloud Forest Reserve (Ecuador)

Weather…

Bellavista Cloud Forest Reserve is located in the Tandayapa Valley on the western slopes of the Andes and is recognized as a pioneer of ecotourism in Ecuador. Founded in 1991, this private reserve protects over 700 hectares of montane cloud forest, celebrated for its staggering biodiversity. Bellavista is world-renowned for its hummingbird diversity; it is common to see more than ten different species at once around the feeders. In 2013, the area gained international fame when the olinguito was scientifically described here, marking the first discovery of a new carnivore species in the Western Hemisphere in 35 years. The lodge’s unique geodesic architecture provides 360-degree views of the lush canopy, home to toucans, quetzals, and the rare mountain tapir. Scientists frequently utilize the reserve for research on epiphytic plant diversity and forest regeneration. An extensive trail network invites visitors to immerse themselves in the mystical and fog-shrouded environment of the high-altitude forest.

Hummingbirds are most active early in the morning when they search for nectar. Late afternoon also provides good birdwatching opportunities, as birds feed once more before dusk.
