Visitors come to Chordeleg to immerse themselves in a town dedicated almost entirely to fine craftsmanship. Often referred to as the jewelry capital of Ecuador, the town's central plaza is lined with dozens of shops showcasing intricate silver and gold filigree, a delicate metalworking technique that produces lace-like jewelry. Aside from precious metals, local artisans are also renowned for producing beautiful ceramics, textiles, and handcrafted leather shoes. The town sits in an Andean valley surrounded by lush green landscapes, offering an easy on the eye setting for a leisurely day trip. Visitors can watch artisans at work in their small workshops, keeping centuries-old traditions alive. After shopping, you can enjoy local culinary delights; the region is known for roasted pork, fresh local cheeses, and traditional sweets made from fig and milk. Chordeleg is incredibly accessible, located just a 45-minute bus or taxi ride from the historic city of Cuenca, making it one of the most popular day-trip destinations in the Azuay province. The town can be visited year-round thanks to its mild Andean climate, but weekends are especially lively when the artisan markets spill out onto the main square.
