The Zongo Falls on the Inkisi River are not only a remarkable natural phenomenon but also a site of significant historical importance for the industrial development of the Congo. Located in Kongo Central Province, the water masses plunge approximately 60 meters, providing handy conditions for hydroelectric power generation. As early as the 1930s, the Zongo I power station was constructed here to supply the growing capital, Leopoldville (now Kinshasa), with electricity. This project marked the beginning of large-scale electrification in the region and attracted numerous specialists and laborers, leading to the establishment of permanent settlements. The surroundings are characterized by dense rainforest, which historically served as a sanctuary for the local population against colonial incursions. The falls are also regarded as a sacred site in the local folklore of the Bakongo people, who attribute spiritual powers to the cascading waters. Today, Zongo Falls integrate natural heritage protection with the continuous provision of clean energy through modern expansions of the power facilities.

The historic Zongo Falls are a natural landmark freely accessible at any time. The falls can be viewed from various lookout points, and there is no entrance fee.

As a natural site, there are no opening hours. However, it is recommended to visit during daylight, as the path to the falls is difficult in the dark.

Photography is allowed everywhere; the falls offer great subjects. Especially spectacular shots can be taken early in the morning with fog or after heavy rainfall.
Time needed
A visit to the falls, including the hike, takes about one to two hours. If you want to linger, picnic, or explore the forest, allow up to three hours.

Combine the falls with a visit to the city of Matadi or the nearby Lufu Valley. The Congo Gorges and the village of Boma are also worth a trip.
Getting there
Zongo Falls are located about 45 km northeast of Matadi in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The best way to get there is with a 4x4, as the last kilometers are gravel roads.
