The Banza-Manteke Mission was one of the earliest and most significant Protestant missionary stations in the Congo, founded in the late 1870s by the Livingstone Inland Mission. Located in the Congo Central Province, it was later managed by the American Baptist Missionary Union. The site became historically famous for the 'Pentecost on the Congo' in 1886, a mass conversion event where hundreds of locals embraced Christianity, sparking a major religious movement in the region. Beyond religious activities, the missionaries established schools and medical facilities that were instrumental in introducing Western education and healthcare to the area. The architecture of the old mission buildings, some constructed from local stone, stands as a testament to this pioneering era. Before the completion of the Matadi-Kinshasa railway, Banza-Manteke served as a vital logistical stop for travelers and porters moving between the Atlantic coast and the interior.
