Veveří Castle (Czech Republic)

Weather…

Veveří Castle, one of the largest and oldest fortified complexes in Moravia, is picturesquely located above the Brno Reservoir. Founded in the early 13th century as a hunting lodge for the Moravian Margraves, it was continuously expanded over the centuries into a major princely residence. A fascinating chapter of its modern history involves Winston Churchill, who visited the estate three times between 1908 and 1912, as he was a close friend of the owner at that time. The castle suffered significant damage during World War II and was further neglected during the post-war era due to improper use. Since the late 1990s, the extensive complex has been undergoing systematic restoration, with special focus on its Romanesque chapel and Gothic palace wings. Today, Veveří serves as a prominent cultural center, hosting exhibitions on Moravian history and architecture.
