The Macocha Abyss is the crown jewel of the Moravian Karst, a vast karst landscape north of Brno. Plunging 138 meters deep, the abyss was formed by the collapse of a giant cave ceiling. Legend has it that a wicked stepmother (Macocha) gave the pit its name after a tragic folk tale. Tourists can view the immense chasm from two observation bridges, but the most popular way to explore is via the Punkva Caves. The tour leads you through magnificent stalactite domes to the very bottom of the abyss, followed by a surreal boat trip along the emerald-green waters of the underground Punkva River. It is an unforgettable experience combining geological history, folklore, and the thrill of exploring the subterranean world of the Czech Republic.
