Znojmo (Czech Republic)

Weather…

Znojmo is one of the oldest royal towns in the Czech Republic, dramatically situated on a high cliff overlooking the Dyje River valley. Its most precious site is the Romanesque Rotunda of St. Catherine, featuring unique 11th-century frescoes of the Přemyslid rulers. Below the surface lies the Znojmo Underground, a vast 27 km network of cellars and corridors, which is among the largest in Central Europe and serves as a thrilling attraction today. The town is equally famous for its agriculture, specifically the 'Znojmo gherkins' and high-quality white wines. The historic core is characterized by its massive fortifications, the Gothic St. Nicholas Church, and the 80-meter-high Town Hall tower offering views all the way to the Alps. Gastronomy here is traditional Moravian, emphasizing local produce and vineyard-to-table wine pairings. As the gateway to Podyjí National Park, the smallest national park in the country, Znojmo is a hub for hikers and cyclists. It is conveniently located about an hour north of Vienna. The best time to visit is during the Znojmo Historical Wine Harvest in September, a massive medieval-themed festival with parades, tournaments, and plenty of local wine and 'burčák' (partially fermented grape juice).
